This lot is a fully washed process and has notes of blackcurrant and rowan berry, with grapefruit acidity in the finish.
Our second fresh-crop Kenyan for 2019 came from Wamuguma Coffee Factory, in the Gatundu district. In Kenya, by law, a farmer with under 5 acres must be organized into a cooperative. Because of this, there are a high number of well-organized unions that own washing stations called coffee factories. This gives the farmers the opportunity to combine their plots of land. Located at 1700 masl, Wamuguma receives cherries from approximately 2000 smallholder farmers in the surrounding region. The station is named after a local dignitary called Muguma, who supported the village in their journey to growing excellent coffee.
Rainfall averages around 1000mm annually, meaning the coffee flowers roughly between June and August and the harvesting periods range from October to January. The area has fertile, red, loamy soil, creating an ideal environment for coffee cultivation.
